BASICS
Everything you have recorded on audio and video tape is at risk….and that risk is increasing exponentially with every passing year.

TAPE ENDANGERMENT ISSUES
Magnetic recording tape was never designed as a long-term storage medium. Tape is primarily designed to be easy to use and easy to copy.

TAPE HANDLING STANDARDS
Failure to adhere to the items on this list may cause premature loss or deterioration of magnetic tapes and should be considered misuse of the medium.

EFFECTS OF MOISTURE ON TAPE
Exposure to water is the primary environmental factor that causes damage to magnetic tape.

EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE ON TAPE
Temperature has three basic effects on magnetic tape.  It can impact the physical dimension of tape, the speed at which the binder decays and the lubricants.

LEGACY TAPE TIMELINE

The evolution of magnetic tape through history

VIDEO TAPE PROLIFERATION UNTIL 2000
Over 65 formats were created and used in 45 years.

HISTORY OF TAPE OBSOLESCENCE
The problem of tape obsolescence has been predicted for decades by many experts. The situation is now critical and the following are primary factors involved.
