ABOUT US
HISTORY

Picture

We are the premier audio and video tape restoration and re-mastering facility in the United States.

A pioneer in the field of magnetic tape restoration, SPECS BROS. is considered by many to be the premiere audio and video tape restoration and re-mastering facility in the United States.  Why our success?  We invented and refined many of the techniques now being used worldwide for tape restoration.  This in-depth knowledge enables us to tailor these techniques to achieve the best results for each tape in ways that no other facility can match.

SPECS BROS. had its roots in a research project for the Broadcast Operations and Engineering department of Viacom.   Working with engineers, chemists, tape manufacturers and equipment designers, the project was tasked with developing procedures and equipment to test, preserve and restore audio and video tape in order to maximize the quality of playback.  In 1983, Peter Brothers, who headed the project, left the organization and, in collaboration with other professionals (a research analyst from CBS, a chemist who worked at DuPont, the chief video engineer of a New York editorial house and an audio engineer with multiple audio patents to his name) established SPECS BROS.

Since our founding we have processed over 350,000 tapes from all eras and from every corner of the globe.  We are widely known for the quality of our restoration and re-mastering services as well as for our disaster recovery abilities.  Our staff have been active members and contributing authors on the technical commissions that write and review both National and International Standards that apply to magnetic tape preservation for the Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers, the Audio Engineering Society, the American National Standards Institute and the International Standards Organization.
