Removable
Media Recovery
If your backup tape,
Zips, Orbits or standard diskettes have been compromised in a disaster
situation, DON'T PANIC. Damage done to removable media by exposure to
fire, water or foreign contamination can be mitigated, allowing you
to recapture vital data. So whether the affected media contains text,
music or graphics, our proven restoration techniques will facilitate
recovery.
Our twenty years
of magnetic media restoration experience have allowed us to develop
restoration protocols individually tailored to backup tape and a variety
of disc formats.
Here are a few basic
tips to help you handle your materials, prevent consequential damage
and get you started on the road to recovery:
6
TIPS TO FACILITATE RECOVERY
- DO NOT LOAD
Attempting to read contaminated media prior to restoration may cause
additional damage and can harm drives.
- HANDLE MATERIAL
CAREFULLY
Exercise extreme care when removing media from a disaster site. All
affected media should be cushioned against shock and protected from
sudden changes in temperature.
- FOR FIRE/SMOKE
CONTAMINATION
Chemicals and techniques used to decontaminate equipment and hard
drives should NOT be applied to removable media. If water or fire-suppressant
chemicals have contaminated tapes or diskettes, they need immediate
attention.
- FOR FLOOD/LIQUID
CONTAMINATION
Removable media exposed to liquids should be decontaminated as soon
as possible to prevent deformation of the tape or disc. Wet media
should be kept cool to slow decay.
- FOR CONSTRUCTION/QUAKE
CONTAMINATION
Plaster and mortar dust are both abrasive and easily spread. Media
should be isolated to prevent further contamination. Do not attempt
to wipe with liquid cleaners. Moisture can chemically activate corrosive
elements: keep tapes and discs dry.
- GET PROFESSIONAL
HELP
Have an expert triage your materials and enact damage control protocols.
The sooner you have the damage assessed, the more complete your recovery
will be.
